X Discussion Topic Only - Figures

  1. Figures - The catalog should only contain figures that were released with an official LEGO item or that can be attributed to an official LEGO activity or event. Figures are defined by assembly as shown in set instructions until minimally complete, in most cases meaning the four components shown below.

The first item shown in assembly instructions is included for each component. Items must be solidly attached together and components may be single pieces or small assemblies serving the same purpose. Accessories are not included for any component except as defined below when shown in instructions.
    Head Covering
Hats or hair are typical head coverings. Directly-attached accessories such as plumes, visors, and sunglasses are included.
    Head
Heads are usually the figure component that displays a face of some kind. Dual-sided heads should be attached as shown in instructions.
    Torso
Torsos are usually an assembly that includes the torso itself, arms, and hands. Some figures require more than one torso assembly.
Hands may only be accessorized when the accessory represents an actual body part or an item so essential that the character is incomplete without it. Accessories such as energy effects, shields, tools, or weapons are not included.
Neckwear is defined as items requiring the removal of the head to be placed over the torso neck, such as armor, backpacks, brackets, and capes. Neckwear is only included at the most minimal level, typically only a single piece.
    Legs
Legs are usually an assembly that includes hips and legs.
Legwear may also be referred to as hipwear and is defined as items requiring the removal of the legs to be attached, such as skirts and utility belts. Legwear is only included at the most minimal level, typically only a single piece.
Footgear such as skates, skis, snowshoes, and swim fins (flippers) that would individually attach to a single real-life foot are included. Energy effects, items that attach to both feet such as surfboards, and figure bases or stands are not included.
    Exceptions and Unusual Circumstances
    • Alternate Figures - These are figures added to account for variations in items that include them:
Complex Assemblies - For extremely complex or contentious assemblies an alternate figure may be added. This is rarely done.
Dolls - Alternate entries with clothing are added for Belville, Duplo, and Scala dolls and included in inventories as counterparts.
Part Color Changes - Always added.
Part Pattern Changes - Added only when the pattern change is believed to be an intentional change by the LEGO Group.
Part Variants - Added only for significant functional or appearance differences in the variant.
Stickered Figures - Always added. When more than one possibility exists for sticker application, only a single figure is added.
Technic Figures - Always added when alternate assemblies are possible.
    • Brick-Built Figures - These figures are decided on a case-by-case basis while adhering as closely as possible to the guidelines above.
    • Conflict Resolution - Discussions for contentious figures should be guided by minimalist principles and by what is most appropriate for each figure in the context of that character's essential nature. Figure guidelines should be updated as necessary to account for unusual circumstances.
    • Early Figures - Figures from 1975 to 1977 were often built into the model and not shown in a freestanding position. In these cases, a figure entry can be created without being prescribed as such in the instructions or box images when four basic parts are present: hat/hair, head, torso, and legs.
    • Figure Entries Created Prior to 2021 - Figures added to the BrickLink catalog during the 2000 to 2020 time period may or may not be replaced if they do not comply with updated figure guidelines, but are not precedent for similar entries.
    • Items Without Instructions - If no official instructions were produced, then illustrations on packaging or other marketing materials directly related to the figure may be used instead. Figures in blister packs or similar packaging are assembled following figure guidelines as closely as possible.
    • LEGO Employee Business Cards - These figures will not be added to the catalog.
    • Loose Parts - Examples of loose parts are projectiles for figures with launchers. Loose parts are not included for figure entries.
    • Part Assemblies or Standard Parts with Stickers - Some figures are standard single parts (a 1 x 2 x 5 brick, for example) or assemblies of standard parts with stickers added. The non-stickered versions of these figures are not added to the catalog separately as figures.
    • Physically Integral Accessories - Some figures, such as those with light-up handheld accessories, are physically integrated with the accessory. In these instances, the complete figure/accessory assembly becomes the catalog entry.
    • Single-Piece Figures - These figures are always added using a category-specific figure item number. The actual part number must be included as an alternate item number. Duplicate catalog entries for a decorated part and the same part as a figure entry are prohibited.
    • Unclear Assembly Instructions - When both set instructions and official images are unclear, no figure may be created for that item. If the lack of clarity only affects an accessory, then a figure entry may be created without the accessory.
