I collect for my Son, who is a huge Lego Star Wars fan, for myself I collect certain technic and UCS set's, and for his Mother, Creator/Creator Expert sets.
We all like the Lego Idea's set's.
My fun is from searching out set's for my wife and son, but more so in buying small lot's, seperating set's, and then ensuring they are "brick correct" before giving him as rewards for achievement's, be they at school or home, swimming or helping with my Land Rover collection.
My son now has quite a large collection now even though he is only 10, but besides the usual Christmas and Birthday items, all the rest are "earned".
I have only just started buying through Bricklink, and so far my first order experience has been great.
